1. Levnedsforløb: af Keith Mortensen, barnebarn. MAREN KIRSTINE HANSEN
By Keith Mortensen, gg grandson
Maren Kirstine Hansen was born on 25 Oct 1811 in Kippinge, Maribo, Denmark. She
married Rasmus Hansen on 17 Dec 1837. I have in my possession a copy of the lines in the
Parish marriage records that indicate that both lived in Bjørup at the time. They stood and
announced their engagement in Church on 19 Nov 1837 and again on 3 Dec 1837. (Such
announcement was the custom in Denmark in those days.)
They had been married only a year and a half when Rasmus was killed, tromped to death
by a horse while serving in the military (according to family tradition). He died on 18 June
1839. They had no children.
Maren married Niels Mortensen on 10 May 1840. To them were born five children: Anne
Margrette on 6 December 1840, Hans Peter on 6 March 1842, (Hans Peter died two days after his
birth.) The next son was named Hans Peter also. He was born 29 March 1843; Malene Bodil
born on 6 July 1845. Bodil's nickname was Bolena. (My family in Parowan always referred to
her as ABolena.@) Maren (Mary) was born 6 August 1847. (When grown, Maren married
Enoch Wardell.)
The 1850 census in Denmark shows eight persons living in the Niels Mortensen home.
These are:
Niels Mortensen, 33, married, Listrup (birthplace), Weaver;
Stine (nickname for Kirstine, pronounced Steena) Hansdatter, 39, married, Kippinge, his wife;
Ane Margrete Nielsen, 10, single, Systofte, their child;
Hans Peter Nielsen, 6, single, Systofte, their child;
Bodil Nielsen, 4, single, Systofte, their child;
Maren Nielsen, 1, single, Systofte, their child;
Magdalene Hansdatter, 70, widow, Nykjøbing, fattig (Afattig,@meaning poor or dependent);
Karen Hansdatter, 26, single, Tingsted, wife=s sister.
We see that Maren Kirstine had taken her widowed mother and single sister in to live
with them. Apparently she was known by the nickname, Stine (Steena) at that time.
When the missionaries came to the island of Falster, Ane Margrete was the first in the
family to become interested in the LDS church. At first her parents did not approve but they
later investigated the church and Niels, Maren Kirstine, Ane Margrete and Hans Peter were
baptized 13 November 1852.
While the government of Denmark had declared that there was freedom of religion in
Denmark, many Lutherans banded together and declared that there were no laws in Denmark to
protect the Mormons and that Mormons deserved to have their windows broken out.
Niels and Maren Kirstine could not send all the family at once and so it was that Ane
Margrete traveled to Zion in the year 1855. The passenger list states, AAnna Margaret
Nielson,@ passage paid for by her father, Niels Mortensen. After that, in the United States, she
was called Mortensen. She arrived safely in Salt Lake that same year awaiting the coming of her
family.
In 1856 the family sent Malene Bodil also. She accompanied a family friend, Jens
Nielson, on the voyage. Jens Nielson sold all his possessions to give to the church that other
members might come to Zion. His record shows he kept only enough to equip his handcart with
15 pounds of supplies per person. Bodil was with his family. Bodil stayed with the Willie
Handcart company until her death at Rock Creek, Wyoming 23 October 1856.
The following year 18 April 1857, aided by the perpetual immigration fund, the
remaining family members left Denmark on the steamer, "L. N. Hvidt" with Hector C. Haight,
who presided over the Scandinavian Mission, in charge. The ship crossed the North Sea to
Grimby, England. They then went by rail across to Liverpool where they boarded the
"Westmoreland" and sailed 25 April 1857 from England with 544 saints on board. With the
company were other missionaries returning to the United States from England: Mathias Cowley,
Lorenzo D. Judd, Henry Lunt and George W. Thurston. Mathias Cowley was appointed
president of the company with Henry Lunt and Ole N. Liljenquist as his counselors.
On 31 May 1857 they arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they were met by
Elder Angus M. Cannon who acted as emigration agent at that port. The remaining arrangements
for their travel to Utah were quickly made and on the 2nd of June the company left Philadelphia
for the West. They traveled by rail on a cattle car through Baltimore and Wheeling to arrive at
Council Bluffs, Iowa on 9 June 1857. It was a hard tiresome journey. It was late fall when they
arrived in the valley.
They arrived there expecting to fmd their daughters together. Unfortunately Brother Jens
Nielson did not have the Mortensen address in Denmark and so the family was unprepared to
receive the news that Bodil had died the previous year. Maren Kirstine, whose health was not
good in any case never fully recovered from the loss of her little child. She may have suffered a
nervous breakdown, is said to have stopped attending church, and died of pneumonia in 1862 in
their dugout in Parowan.
It was while they were in Salt Lake City that the family went to the Endowment House to
receive their temple blessings and the family was sealed together. Bodil's work was done with
the surname Nielsen.
The family did not remain in Salt Lake City long. The original plans were for them to
settle in Brigham City, Utah but they were persuaded by friends to go to Parowan. By the time
Maren and her family arrived there a fort had been built. Their first home was inside the fort, a
dugout or a cellar like adobe structure, partly underground.
When lots outside the fort were surveyed and numbered church members who were
residents of Parowan were allowed to draw for them and were given title to the lots they drew.
Niels drew two lots on the north end of town. Here he grew his first vegetable garden. Later he
bought or traded for two more lots in the place where the Seminary building now stands. Later
still he built his first home of adobe there. The ground was ready to begin building when Maren
became ill with pneumonia and died. (I believe that Niels was working in Salt Lake City at the
time to set up the weaving trade, at the request of Brigham Young.) Prior to her death Niels had
hired Elisabeth Carson Lewis to care for Maren and the other members of his family. Elisabeth
surely needed a home. She had recently become separated from her second husband, Tarleton
Lewis, and had her four small children to care for. Niels married Elizabeth Carson Lewis in
1863 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. They had many children of their own and had
a good life in Parowan.
Maren saw much adversity in her life. Her first husband was killed (apparently in an
accident with a horse while serving in the military) early in the marriage before they had
children. She married again and her second child died when two days old. They joined the
Church in Denmark and suffered persecution. Her ten-year-old daughter died in the Willie
handcart company. She is said to have Apined greatly@ and never recovered after learning of
Bodil=s death. She died of pneumonia in a dugout home in the winter while waiting for their
home to be built. She did not get to enjoy the good times that came to her family later.
